Primary care addresses the healthcare needs of all children, ranging from those in good health to those with serious, complex needs.
We offer specialized, routine and acute medical care for your child from birth through adolescence, and are committed to promoting health and wellness through the delivery of excellent clinical care in a compassionate environment. We are devoted to helping you maintain the health of your child by providing well-child visits, newborn exams, school/sports physicals, phone advice, care for the sick child, immunizations, pre-adoption consultations, specialty referrals, and guidance. This is all done in a teaching environment, which ensures you receive the most advanced and up-to-date care.
Recognized standards of practice
Checkups, health maintenance, and preventive health screening
For healthy children, we follow the well-child schedule outlined by the AAP and Bright Futures. This design follows children more closely in the first three years of life with more frequent visits with an emphasis on growth and development. Variations in this schedule may be recommended and additional visits may become necessary for those children with growth and developmental concerns, psychosocial, and chronic disease issues. The annual checkup is an excellent time to discuss a broad range of health issues and parental challenges requiring anticipatory guidance. Plenty of time will be given to discuss your concerns and your child will receive a complete physical examination. During these visits, we will update immunizations, order relevant laboratory tests, and evaluate your child for any physical or psychosocial problems or health-risk behaviors.
Health forms
The department of Pediatrics has implemented several new policies to ensure that your health-related school/camp form submission is timely and accurate. To this end, we ask that you please review our new policies mentioned below:

We have identified a team of dedicated staff to support the timely completion of your forms. They are specifically designated to accept school forms and process them to completion, improving our consistency and accountability.

Requests to complete forms can be dropped off in-person, mailed to the clinic, or faxed to 877-680-5502. Completed forms will either be mailed to the address provided or held for pick up by a parent or legal guardian. Forms will not be faxed or emailed to the requestor(s). All original copies will be held for 30 days. After 30 days, a copy of the original can be provided upon request.

The demographic section of the form must be completed by parent or legal guardian and signed at the time of submission in order for us to process your request. We will attempt to contact the parent or guardian regarding fax requests that are illegible. If we cannot reach the requestor, we will be unable to process your request. Given that we use the contact information we have on file, please ensure that all information submitted is current.

As in the past, we require that your child have had a well-child exam within the last 12 months in order for us to complete his/her form. If your child has not had a well-child exam within the last year, you will be asked to schedule this appointment with our office prior to our staff accepting and completing the form. We will be able to provide a shot record at your request, regardless of the last visit date.

There will be a charge for each form submitted. We ask that you pay in full at the time of your request.

New and prospective patient orientation
Are you a new patient or family that recently joined our practice and want to learn more about how we operate? Are you expecting a new baby and are interested in learning more about the services we offer? Are you considering switching from your current pediatrician's office to our practice and want to learn more about who we are and what we offer before you transition?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above, then you are invited to attend a "New and Prospective Patient Orientation" class at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. These sessions will be lead by one of our general pediatricians and will consist of an information session followed by a tour of our practice. The information session will answer all of your questions such as: what is an academic practice and how does it work? How do I pick someone for my child to have an appointment with? What should I expect when having a new baby? What is your policy on vaccination? Currently we are offering one class per month, but depending on volume may increase the number of sessions. In an Emergency
For urgent care after office hours, call the page operator at 202-444-7243 and ask for the CYAS pediatrician on call, or the desired subspecialist on call. Please leave your name, phone number, child’s date of birth, and the doctor will call you back. However, if you do not hear back from the doctor within 30 minutes call again.
If your child is extremely ill, go straight to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
