About the Provider

Bridget Oppong, MD, FACS is a board-certified surgeon specializing in breast disease. She has fellowship training in advanced breast cancer surgery, including skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy, breast conservation utilizing oncoplastic techniques, and partial-breast irradiation. Dr. Oppong is an assistant professor of Surgery at Georgetown University and is an attending physician, MedStar Breast Health Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency, and completed a prestigious fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Dr. Oppong's research interests span a wide array of topics including outcomes research focusing on minority health and health disparities in breast cancer. She is dedicated to international breast health and improving cancer care in developing countries. Most recently, she worked in Nigeria, providing cancer screening and surgical management for all breast disease. She has authored numerous abstracts and articles for peer-reviewed publications, including Oncology, Breast Disease, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Oppong also has presented at national meetings including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Her work entitled 'The Importance of Patient Navigation in High Risk Screening Programs: The Capital Breast Care Center Experience' was exceptionally well received.

She is reputed to have an excellent bedside manner, providing individualized and compassionate care. She is motivated to guiding her patients through the difficulties of cancer treatment through education and support. She not only strives to achieve an optimal cosmetic result, but also addresses the social and emotional consequences of a cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Oppong's practice locations include the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the MedStar Mitchellville office.
