Philosophy of the Division of Nursing
At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, the philosophy of nursing integrates the practice of professional nursing, the patient as a person and the nursing practice environment.
The Division of Nursing recognizes that each patient is a member of an international community with culturally diverse ideas and values related to his or her health care needs.
The Division of Nursing believes that human beings regardless of circumstances (social, economic status, personal attributes or the nature of health problems), possess intrinsic worth and value and should be afforded dignity and respect in all facets of care; health and wellness care, acute care, palliative care and end of life care. Each person may respond uniquely to hospitalization, illness and pain, based on personal history, values and multiple factors including genomes.
The Division of Nursing provides care to patients and their families in a respectful, caring manner. Nursing delivers care that is appropriate, effective, and efficient and designed to affect specific outcomes.
Nursing care assists patients when they are unable to meet their own biophysical, psychological, development, environmental and spiritual needs. MedStar Georgetown's Caring Model provides guidance in providing care. Professional nursing care is patient centered and is evidence based. The practice of nursing care encompasses the promotion and restoration of health and optional quality of life, the prevention of illness and the alleviation of suffering (physical and emotional pain). Family members and significant others are respected as an integral part of holistic care.
The Environment of Practice
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a tertiary hospital that integrates science and medical discovery with the Jesuit Catholic Health Care tradition of service and caring. The provision of patient care at MedStar Georgetown is multidisciplinary and is based on a foundation of basic and applied physical and social sciences, nursing and medical theory and biomedical technology combined with the art of caring. Nursing thrives in an environment that fosters scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Leadership in the Division of Nursing works to continually enhance this environment by supporting professional nursing, Shared Governance, and is mutually respectful of multidisciplinary patient care teams dedicated to optional patient care and outcomes.
