The Kathleen Clifford Beard Award was created to honor the memory of our Georgetown University colleague – Kathleen Clifford Beard. After 10 years serving as Nurse Manager for the OB/GYN inpatient units, Mrs. Beard was chosen to spearhead the Patient Advocacy Program which she built from “scratch” and managed single-handedly for over 15 years. Mrs. Beard instilled in her colleagues the belief that it was a privilege to work at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital serving our patients, their families and our staff. Through her spirit, humor and unique style, she set a new standard for concern, commitment and advocacy for patients and their families – while at the same time providing consistent, thoughtful support for nurses, physicians and staff at the Hospital. Her “radar” for people in need was extraordinary. She would always be the first resource at their side immediately offering to provide assistance; and in the process, she redefined the concept of “going the extra mile” for all those we serve. She earned the respect and trust of patients, families, physicians and colleagues along the way.
This prestigious award is given to the nurse who embodies the high standards set by Kathleen Clifford Beard’s profound passion for her profession and her devotion to patients and colleagues here at Georgetown. This year’s nominees should be excellent clinicians and powerful advocates for patients, families and staff.

The winner will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon during Nurses Week and will receive a monetary award!
Any RN who is employed by MGUH, and meets the selection criteria, may be nominated. The candidate must be in good standing and not in the disciplinary process.
