Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Price Transparency Disclosure
MedStar Health is committed to helping patients and families make well-informed choices for their healthcare needs, and that includes providing information about the cost of care.
The information provided here and in the link below is a comprehensive list of charges for each inpatient and outpatient service or item provided by a hospital, also known as a charge master. The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began requiring this information to be published on hospital websites in January 2019.
It’s important to keep in mind that this information is only the amount a hospital charges for a service, and is not the actual cost of care for patients. Your out-of-pocket costs will vary, given the following factors:
- Your insurance coverage determines how much of the charge is allowed, and this amount can vary by insurance companies and your coverage.
- The charges reflect hospital charges only, and do not include physician or other provider fees that are billed separately from hospital fees. Depending on the service you receive, you could get bills from multiple physicians, including but not limited to an anesthesiologist, hospitalist, pathologist, radiologist, cardiologist, emergency room physician, and other specialists who participate in your care. If you have questions regarding the bill for their services, you would need to contact the individual provider.
- The charges displayed are current as of December 11, 2018. This information will be updated annually. We encourage patients and consumers to call us for an estimate if they are considering a specific service or procedure.
- The published information is strictly related to the amount charged for a service. Hospitals are paid based on contracted rates for the services they provide, which are generally lower than charge master rates. Insurers pay for significant portions of healthcare services. The out-of-pocket amount patients may pay depends on their insurance coverage and/or eligibility for MedStar’s financial assistance policy.
To better understand your healthcare coverage and receive an estimate of costs, please contact your insurance provider or the MedStar Patient Financial Services office at (410) 933-8200 or toll-free (866) 423-2734, during normal business hours (6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST).
