MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center is one of 33 major medical centers that participated in the 2011 National Lung Screening Trial. Armed with the results of this trial, we launched a large and comprehensive lung cancer CT screening program in the region — one of the first of its kind in the country.
Our doctors are involved with the latest research and offer clinical trials to appropriate patients across our network. One of our studies substitutes CyberKnife radiation for the surgical treatment of the main type of lung cancer.
Before quitting 10 years ago, Mary and Michael Baroody were both heavy smokers for 35+ years. Thanks to the latest screening process, doctors were able to diagnose lung cancer at very early stages and provide treatment before it advanced to a life-threatening condition.

Lung Cancer Screening and Risk Factors
While we don’t always know what causes lung cancer, a number of factors increase your risk of getting the disease. The risk of developing lung cancer is even greater if you smoke (or smoked) and have other risk factors, too.
CyberKnife destroys tumors using highly precise, targeted radiation, with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike conventional radiation therapy that can require more than 40 sessions, CyberKnife is complete after only five treatments.
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is proud to announce the expansion of our comprehensive interventional pulmonology program that includes advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy and treatment for central airway disease, pleural disease and lung cancer.
