Offering Sophisticated and Highly Specialized Services
At MedStar Georgetown, we have the advanced tools and specialized expertise to successfully treat sarcoma, developing individualized treatment plans targeting each cancer’s unique pathology.
In addition to our surgeons, our pathologists focus on musculoskeletal disease—an unusual specialty—and our radiologists focus on orthopedics. They are joined by other specialists at regular tumor boards to discuss new patients and create comprehensive, individualized treatment plans.
The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, D.C. region.

Types of Bone Cancer
While primary bone sarcomas are rare, they destroy healthy bone tissue and need prompt treatment. Fortunately, they are usually found in the earlier stages before they have spread.
While soft tissue sarcomas can occasionally form in bones, they usually develop in fat, muscle, nerves, tendons, joint linings, or blood or lymph vessels—the tissues that connect, support, and surround other body parts and organs.
If you require surgery for cancer, you want the best doctors and treatment available. At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, we provide the expertise, compassion and advanced treatment options you need for a successful outcome.
In many cases, our doctors can carefully monitor a benign tumor, as it may not grow or cause problems. Some childhood tumors may fully resolve over time as the bone matures with age.
