Why Choose MedStar Georgetown Division of Interventional Radiology?
Our interventional radiology specialists can perform biopsies, deliver carefully targeted radiation, eradicate diseased tissues, and provide pain relief—all by using techniques that require only pin-hole sized incisions, or no incisions at all. These minimally-invasive approaches can shorten healing time and reduce the risk of complications.
Nationally-renowned oncology expertise
If you are fighting cancer, we are in your corner. The Division of Interventional Radiology at MedStar Georgetown is here to help you achieve your best health outcomes.
The Division of Interventional Radiology at MedStar Georgetown is one of the largest centers in the country. Our team sees many cancer patients and performs hundreds of chemoembolization and radioembolization treatments each year. High patient volume allows clinicians to develop deep expertise, and is associated with better patient outcomes. Our reputation for excellence draws patients from around the country.
At MedStar Georgetown, several interventional radiologists focus almost exclusively on cancer care. This emphasis on oncology allows our physicians to hone their treatment techniques, stay up-to-date on the latest research, and can give medical advice informed by their experience with similar cases. At many other interventional radiology centers, clinicians do not specialize in the care of particular conditions.
Cancer treatment is often complex, and it can be best treated at a hospital with a wide range of clinical specialties. At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, you will find not only a strong Department of Interventional Radiology, but experts in oncology, radiation oncology, transplant, pathology, neuroscience, gastroenterology, and more. Our interventional radiologists work closely with clinical colleagues throughout the hospital, providing patients with seamless and comprehensive care.
Advanced techniques and equipment
MedStar Georgetown offers a spectrum of interventional radiation treatments, ranging from chemoembolization for treatment of primary liver cancer to irreversible electroporation (IRE) for primary pancreatic cancer. We provide a greater number of treatment options than many interventional radiation departments, even those housed at other large research hospitals.
The Department of Interventional Radiology is equipped with the latest technology. Technological innovations include irreversible electroporation (IRE) which can allow for a non-surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer and Yttrium-90 radioembolization where radiation particles are delivered selectively to liver cancers.
Leaders in research
MedStar Georgetown’s interventional radiologist specialists are leaders in the research community. Through both lab and clinical studies, they are working to maximize patient safety and develop the next generation of oncological treatments.
In partnership with Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department of Interventional Radiology offers our patients the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials, including a trial of a new chemoembolization delivery system for liver cancer. Research participation can allow patients to benefit from the very latest breakthroughs in oncological care.
Leaders in Education
The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center provides the unique opportunity for fellows to develop clinical skills and research interests under the tutelage of a large, experienced faculty in the preeminent hospitals in the Washington, D.C. area.
