About me

Dr. Abrams is Assistant Professor of Surgery at MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute (MGTI) and practices at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Prior to joining MGTI, he was director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a highly skilled kidney/pancreas transplant surgeon, who is leading the effort at MGTI to increase access to pancreas transplantation for patients suffering from complications of type 1 diabetes mellitus and for selected patients with type 2 diabetes. He offers a complete range of surgical skills including cadaveric and living donor kidney transplantation, laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy, and pancreas transplantation. Dr. Abrams is board certified in general surgery and accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

Dr. Abrams is a graduate of Georgetown University.  He earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Abrams completed his general surgery residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery, where he served as Administrative Chief Resident. He then completed a Multi-organ Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Abrams has published several scientific articles and chapters and has presented his work at annual meetings of the International Transplantation Society, American Society of Transplant Surgeons and American Transplant Society.

Dr. Abrams' Philosophy of Care

Dr. Abrams is dedicated to providing the best possible care for patients with end-stage kidney disease as well as complications of type 1 diabetes mellitus. He believes it is important to take the time to listen to each patient and then encourage him or her to take part in the decision-making process.
