The MedStar Spine Center at Chevy Chase is like nothing else available today. Under one roof, you will find the area’s first true, collaborative collection of specialists dedicated to treating all spinal conditions affecting children and adults with a full range of non-surgical, minimally invasive and complex surgical techniques. It’s an ideal approach to assure comprehensive, convenient and coordinated care, with maximum results in the minimum of amount of time.
A multidisciplinary team of 10 physician experts, working together for your benefit
The MedStar Spine Center is home to one of the most experienced multidisciplinary teams of spine specialists on the East Coast. All board-certified and fellowship-trained, our physicians include:
Physiatrists—Physicians trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions. Physiatrists use a variety of approaches to treat back and neck pain non-surgically, including interventional spine procedures. These specialists are often your first contact in the treatment process.
Spine Surgeons—Experts in either neurosurgery or orthopaedic surgery who focus exclusively on conditions affecting the spine that cannot be relieved through other means. Each patient is first carefully evaluated to achieve the most effective and long-lasting outcome through the most appropriate minimally invasive or complex surgical technique.
Pediatric Spine Surgeons—Specialty surgeons with additional fellowship training in pediatric spine conditions. The MedStar Spine Center is one of the very few in the area to care for children aged 10 and up.
Psychologists—Experts who help patients cope with both the physical and emotional aspects of pain. Psychologists teach relaxation techniques, help patients build new coping skills and adopt lifestyle changes to help address pain-related anxiety or depression.
At the MedStar Spine Center at Chevy Chase, we offer a full spectrum of out-patient treatments, consultation and follow-up for both acute and chronic back and neck conditions. Treatment is tailored to the specific needs of each individual and always starts with the most conservative and gentle approaches possible.
Upon arrival, you are evaluated by one of our physiatrists as the first step toward an accurate diagnosis. As part of that process, you may also need imaging studies to look for abnormalities, with X-rays and other imaging available on-site for your convenience.
Fortunately, most patients can be helped through the Center’s many non-surgical treatments. For the less than 10 percent who see little or no improvement, however, the physiatrist will schedule a consultation at the Chevy Chase site with one of our spine surgeons.
Should surgery be the answer, procedures are performed at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, with many patients eligible for a minimally invasive procedure. In fact, MedStar Georgetown uses minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS) for more conditions than any other hospital in the area.
Additionally, if you have already been recommended for surgery and are seeking a second opinion, our surgeons will be happy to evaluate you and help you come to the best decision for your condition.
The specialists at the MedStar Spine Center are the experts of today and the architects of tomorrow’s care. Not only do they deliver the most up-to-date patient care currently available, but they also conduct the research that will help develop and perfect the treatments and cures of the future. Equally important, they teach and train the next generation of spine specialists through class-room and hands-on instruction, as well as major national and international lectures.
In addition, our specialists help many gain access to new treatments and approaches through clinical trials, often unavailable elsewhere. For eligible and willing patients, improved health—or a personal contribution toward the health of others—is often the reward.
