Heidi Young, MD

Heidi Young, MD, Director

Heidi Young received her B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed internal medicine residency at University of Chicago followed by a chief resident year at Macneal Hospital in the Chicago suburbs. Returning to DC in 2010, she completed fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine through NIH/Capital Caring in 2011. She has served as a general internist and palliative medicine consultant at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital since 2011, and is now the Director of the Palliative Medicine Program.

Derek Thompson, MD

Derek Thompson, MD

Derek Thompson received his B.A. in English from Wesleyan University and his M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training in the Boston University Medical Center Residency Program. After working for several years as a hospitalist, Dr. Thompson developed an interest in palliative medicine. He served six years as a medical director for Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, and earned Hospice and Palliative Medicine certification in 2010. He joined the Division on General Internal Medicine in August 2013.

Beth Orrell, CRNP

Beth Orrell received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Eastern Mennonite University in 1985 and her Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. She is certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. Prior to joining MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s palliative care team, Ms. Orrell worked for 28 years at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s intensive care and cardio-thorasic stepdown units as a staff nurse, clinical manager and nurse practitioner providing post-surgical care to patients recovering from heart surgery. She joined MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s palliative care program in August 2014.
