KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile
The KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic is proud to work in collaboration with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC as a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Program. This unique network of mobile units allows us to help children around the world receive better care and promote MedStar Georgetown’s mission of “cura personalis”—caring for the whole person.
Since 1992, the KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (KMMC) has provided more than 50,000 patient visits to children and adolescents living in the underserved communities of the District of Columbia who are at risk and have poor access to comprehensive pediatric health care services.
During the last year, we provided more than 1,750 medical visits to 900 children who live in some of the city's most impoverished neighborhoods of Wards 5, 6, 7 and 8. We have also provided more than 267 mental health and social service interventions. Our unique coordinated team approach to care is a best practice model. The clinic will continue to provide a medical home to children and their families for years to come.
Since the program's inception, our mission has remained steadfast. The KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile was founded on the belief that every child, regardless of financial means, deserves high quality, coordinated, community based, family centered, and comprehensive care. We continue to surround each child with a “blanket of care” within the scope of the program’s key areas and programs:
- Comprehensive Pediatric and Adolescent Wellness Care
- Acute Care
- Child Advocacy and Mental Health
- Social Services
- Education and Outreach
- Vision Care
The mission of the KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (KMMC) is to improve access for underserved children to comprehensive services necessary to achieve better health care. This mission is based on the belief that every child, regardless of his/her financial means, deserves high-quality, comprehensive, continuous health care, delivered in a respectful, caring and family centered environment-a "medical home." Our pediatric mobile clinic achieves this mission by delivering primary medical care to children, age birth to 21 years, directly in their neighborhoods at no direct cost to their caregivers. While providing primary medical care is our principle focus, we have incrementally expanded our programming to include mental health and social services, education, advocacy and hope to have ophthalmology services in the near future. Only by working as a professional team, can we hope to provide our patients with the services they need. As part of a larger institution of advanced education, our mission is also reflective of Georgetown University's commitment to educate "women and men to be responsible and active participants in civic life, and to live generously in service to others."
Who Are We
The KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is under the direction of the Division of Community Pediatrics, which is part of the Department of Pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital, a MedStar Health Partner. We are a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 program. The KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile staff is a dynamic team of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing quality services to children, adolescents and families. This team is truly greater than the sum of its parts, and includes doctors, nurses, social service providers and an administrative support team.
During the last few years, our program has diversified and expanded our relationships. Last year, with the very generous support of partners and collaborators like Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC, CVS/Caremark Charitable Trust, The Joseph E. & Marjorie B. Jones Foundation, the Michele Snyder Foundation, the Clark-Winchcole Foundation, and the W. O’Neill Foundation, we have been able to bring more services to more children in need.
Who Is Eligible
All children ages 0-21 are eligible for our program whether or not they have medical insurance. Additionally, we also treat patients who have Medicaid coverage, but who do not have a regular doctor or pediatric clinic. There are no out-of-pocket expenses to patients or their families.
Five days a week, the bright white KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile drives into federally designated health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) and offers comprehensive general pediatric health care services at five different sites and comprehensive adolescent health care services at a two additional sites. The first four sites are located near seven public housing areas with an estimated 2,000 underserved children. Our fifth site is located at an Emergency Homeless Shelter. Our fifth and sixth sites, which serves two public high schools with an estimated 1,800 students, is dedicated to providing comprehensive adolescent health care.
Our comprehensive health care model offers patients the following services:
- School/sports/summer camp physicals
- Well and sick visits
- Tuberculosis screenings
- Hearing/vision screenings
- Gynecologic services
- Referrals to specialists as needed
- Medical management for chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes and HIV/AIDS
Also, we offer on-call services-24 hours a day and seven days a week.
Education is a key to prevention and wellness for both the individual and the community. Our staff spends a significant portion of each visit educating families on prevention and other healthcare related issues. In the community, as well as in the high schools we serve, we are reaching out by offering education sessions to community residents on general topics such as asthma, immunizations, and nutrition. The KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a regular participant in health fairs, immunization campaigns, and other outreach activities throughout the wards we serve. This outreach offers us visibility to both those who need our services and those community service organizations that wish to partner with us to provide more comprehensive services to the children in the District of Columbia.
