Hereditary Cancer Screening

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is now offering hereditary cancer screening.

We will be focusing on breast and ovarian cancer screening and consultations. Patients may be referred for genetic testing for several reasons:

  • Any new diagnosis of breast cancer from a biopsy
  • Personal history of breast cancer at any age
  • Personal or family history of ovarian, fallopian, peritoneal, uterine, colon, pancreatic, prostate, male breast cancer, and melanoma

All patients must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for testing. We utilize a custom 24 gene panel and can expand to a broader hereditary panel if warranted. Collection is easy. Most patients are eligible to give a saliva sample. Patients that are not eligible for saliva samples will give a blood sample. Test results take about three to four weeks, and your provider will schedule a telehealth consult to review your results.

To schedule an appointment, please call 202-444-8531.
