Labor and Delivery
Welcome to MedStar Georgetown’s Labor and Delivery Unit. It is located on the third floor of the Main Building, the only unit with the wood door.
Once you arrive, please “buzz” for entry, and come directly to the nurses’ station to sign in…we are expecting you!
We are very pleased to offer 5 Labor and Delivery Rooms. In this room, mothers labor, deliver and recover. Mothers may walk, use a birth ball, a Jacuzzi, aroma therapy, a doula and all relaxation/comfort measures as needed for the birth of her child. Our highly trained staff is a constant presence focused on the health and safety of mother and baby. Holding your newborn skin to skin immediately after birth is encouraged and supported for all mothers.
MedStar Georgetown does not have a full time Nursery. After about an hour of skin to skin time with your infant, your baby will be moved to a small space located directly across from the mother’s bed. Here your baby will have his/her first physical exam. Your support person (Dad, significant other, or designated person) is encouraged to remain with the baby and observe this admission physical. Your baby is returned to you immediately afterward. Recovery time is usually 2 to 3 hours after delivery.
CONGRATULATIONS on the birth of your baby!
You will be welcomed to another room after your recovery! You will have 48 hours (vaginal birth) or 72 hours (Cesarean birth) before going home. Mothers and infants room together. Examinations, hearing test and daily routines all take place in your room.
You will have the opportunity to get to know your baby, practice some new skills (ie. diapering and cord care), ask many questions and practice feedings before discharge. Your support person is welcome to spend the night in a “chair bed.” It is essential and required that an infant car seat be installed and secure in your vehicle’s back seat before discharge. The Maternity Unit is located on the 2nd floor of the Main Hospital Building
For all the mothers who choose to breastfeed, MedStar Georgetown provides full time International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) services.
A Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which offers subspecialty services, is directly connected to the Labor and Delivery Unit and is available for any infant in need of special newborn care. Learn more about MedStar Georgetown's NICU.
