Recognize a Nurse

Recognizing Our Best

Every May, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital celebrates National Nurses Week with a series of events designed to honor our nursing staff. National Nurses Week activities include meals, massages, gifts and presentations. The culmination of our celebration is the Annual Nursing Awards Luncheon, where we recognize exceptional nurses who have been nominated by their peers for their embodiment of cura personalis (care of the whole person) and focus on our SPIRIT values.

The Kathleen Clifford Beard Award was created to honor the memory of our MedStar Georgetown University Hospital colleague – Kathleen Clifford Beard. After 10 years serving as Nurse Manager for the OB/GYN inpatient units, Kathleen was chosen to spearhead the Patient Advocacy Program. She built this program from scratch and, for over 15 years, single-handedly managed its work. Kathleen instilled in her colleagues the belief that it was a privilege to serve patients, families, and staff at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Through her spirit, humor and unique style, she set a new standard for concern, commitment and advocacy for patients and their families – while at the same time providing consistent, thoughtful support for nurses, physicians and staff. Kathleen demonstrated an extraordinary ability to notice people in need and was always the first to offer assistance. Through her work, she redefined the concept of “going the extra mile” for all those we serve. She earned the respect and trust of patients, families, physicians and colleagues along the way. This prestigious award is given to a nurse who embodies Kathleen Clifford Beard’s passion for her profession and devotion to patients and colleagues. Nominees should be excellent clinicians and powerful advocates for patients, families and staff.
