Join Us Saturday, June 8, 2019 for LIVER LIFE WALK Washington, D.C. to Raise Funds to End Liver Disease
This walk was created in conjunction with the American Liver Foundation and the money raised will go towards continued research of all liver disease and will be held at the National Harbor from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Liver Life Walk is the largest event organized by the American Liver Foundation, reaching an audience of more than 1,400 supporters in the Mid-Atlantic Division. We at MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute have been fortunate enough to partner with the American Liver Foundation this year to bring awareness to the D.C. Metropolitan area.
Walk for Fun…Walk for Life!
It’s not just a motto; it’s exactly what you’ll be doing when you participate in the Liver Life Walk.
The Liver Life Walk aims to break barriers of stigma and to further educate the public on liver health. It brings together those with liver disease in an inviting and fun atmosphere. There is no registration fee, teams sign up to recruit participants and raise funds/awareness for the fight against liver disease.
Whether you have been directly affected by liver disease or find interest in learning about liver health, the Liver Life Walk is for you. This event will unite families and friends, patients and providers, corporations and the community in the fight against liver disease.
Please contact Andrea Keller at [email protected] with any questions.
Meet our MedStar Georgetown Liver Life Walk “Liver Champion” David Badakhshan
David, whose birth name is Darioush, came to the United States from Iran in June 1972 and he’s never looked back. It was here that he got married 35 years ago and raised his two children, daughter Tammira, 30, and son Auria, 26, and became the proud grandfather of two-year-old Leland.
But in 2015, he became sick. After weeks of hospitalizations, doctors determined that he needed a liver transplant. But David wasn’t ready to take that step yet. Unfortunately, his condition continued to worsen and at the end of 2017 his daughter took him to a local hospital where he went into a coma caused by the damage inflicted by his liver disease.
After weeks of failing to improve he was transferred to MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute where he was cared for by our team of doctors, nurses and support staff until he was well enough to be listed for transplant. On June 8, 2018, David successfully received a life-saving liver transplant.
He recently wrote us this letter of thanks:
“The help and the exceptionally high level of patient care that I received at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is beyond my ability to explain. Never have I felt so loved and cared for in my entire life. These heroes gave me a second life and I am forever grateful. I want to thank all living donors and those donors who are deceased for providing the ultimate sacrifice to allow for true miracle to happen for people in need of a transplant like me.” Forever Thankful and Blessed, Darioush Badakhshan
Because of his life-transforming experience as a transplant recipient, David has been inspired to be an advocate for organ donation. He now spends a great deal of time and provides support for many “Donate Life” efforts to encourage people to become organ donors.

“Dunk a Doc” has been one of the highlights over the last few years – again thank you to Dr. Satoskar, Dr. Rangnekar and Dave Zwerski, VP of transplant, for jumping in feet first this past year! Next year we will see who is ready to get wet.
