Acoustic Neuroma Surgery

Microsurgery is one method we can use to remove part or all of your acoustic neuroma. Microsurgery uses an operating microscope, along with specialized instruments and techniques to access your tumor, while giving your neurosurgeon the ability to preserve facial function and hearing.

At Medstar Georgetown, we have both the expertise and state-of-the-art tools to offer three different surgical approaches to acoustic neuroma resection (surgical removal). Most hospitals in our region are only equipped to offer one.

These approaches are:

  • Middle fossa approach: This is known as the best approach for hearing preservation and is designed for small tumors located within your ear canal. Your neurosurgeon will access the tumor by removing a small area of your skull above your ear.
  • Retrosigmoid approach: This approach is designed for tumors located in the space between the brain’s cerebellum (located at the bottom of the brain) and brain stem. Your neurosurgeon will access the tumor by removing a small portion of your skull near the back of your head.
  • Translabyrinthine approach: This is best for patients with tumors of any size who have already permanently lost their hearing. Your neurosurgeon will access the tumor by removing a portion of your skull behind your ear.

Cyberknife Radiosurgery to Treat Acoustic Neuroma

Cyberknife is the latest in stereotactic radiation technology. In stereotactic radiosurgery, your physician delivers targeted doses of radiation to your acoustic neuroma to stop it from growing.

Cyberknife improves on other stereotactic radiation technologies by:

  • Accurately delivering radiation to moving tumor targets, even as you breath
  • Not requiring a rigid head frame to stabilize you, unlike other devices
  • Beaming higher and more concentrated radiation doses, while limiting exposure to healthy tissue nearby
