MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Histocompatibility Laboratory provides state-of-the-art histocompatibility and immunogenetics testing for solid organ and stem cell transplantation, pre- and post-transplant immune assessment, and testing for the diagnosis of diseases with associations to the human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The laboratory is accredited by the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and The College of American Pathologists (CAP).
As one of the nationally recognized leaders in the field of histocompatibility and immunogenetics, we offer histocompatibility testing and HLA typing services for ten MedStar Health hospitals in the Washington and Baltimore areas. The Laboratory supports solid organ transplant programs (kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, and small bowel) at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Medstar Washington Hospital Center, and Children’s National Medical Center. In addition, the laboratory provides deceased donor HLA typing services for the local organ procurement organization, Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC).
Potential organ donors and recipients are HLA typed using the latest DNA-based molecular technologies. The Laboratory routinely monitors for anti-HLA antibody in each recipient’s serum to avoid incompatible donors. Prospective flow cytometric crossmatches are performed using recipient serum and donor cells to further evaluate compatibility. This state-of-the art histocompatibility testing is performed to reduce the risk of organ rejection by avoiding clinically relevant antibodies against potential donors. The Laboratory also routinely provides post-transplant antibody monitoring in order to reduce the incidence of antibody-mediated graft rejection. In addition, the Laboratory provides histocompatibility testing for the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at MedStar Georgetown. Routine intermediate and high resolution HLA typing is performed in support of the BMT program.
The Histocompatibility Laboratory is staffed with dedicated personnel who undergo continuous training, proficiency testing and competency review. A quality assurance program is in place to monitor and verify compliance with regulations and to ensure quality. The laboratory has a technologist qualified to perform deceased donor HLA typing and crossmatching on-site or on-call 24/7/365. The laboratory director is available for consultation either on-site or by phone or email 24/7/365.
