A Baby's Arrival Delivers Lasting Relationship

By Katie Paradis

Kristina Keller with her husband and son Kristina Keller of Clifton, Virginia, considered her pregnancy pretty uneventful. The first-time mom, 35, was feeling good and staying active leading up to the birth of her son Jack – including hitting the gym the day before she was scheduled to deliver. Even with her smooth pregnancy, like so many expecting parents, Kristina wanted the best prenatal care possible. When she didn’t feel that’s what she was getting, she found MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

“I originally was at a different Ob/Gyn practice,” Kristina says. “Everything was fine until the one-hour glucose test which I failed. I had many questions and was unable to get answers. Then a family member encouraged me to transfer to MedStar Georgetown.”

Kristina came to the Department of Women's Health at MedStar Georgetown six months into her pregnancy. A little hesitant to change providers that far along, today she’s glad she did.

“Best decision ever,” Kristina says. “My questions were answered, and I did the three-hour glucose test and passed. It turned out that it wasn’t as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be. And I was able to schedule all of my appointments in advance, so I could plan my work schedule.”

“Every step of the way, the team discussed options with us to help us make decisions that were safest for myself and the baby.”

Helain J. Landy, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, emphasizes the commitment to excellence in women’s health and maternity care at MedStar Georgetown.

"We are thrilled that Kristina had such a positive experience at MedStar Georgetown,” says Dr. Landy. “Our goals are to have a healthy mother and a healthy baby, even when unexpected events occur. We strive to provide the best care for all patients and their babies, following evidence-based guidelines, and working as a team to address every concern or question."

And for Kristina and her husband, Brian, the team at MedStar Georgetown did just that.

“Every nurse and doctor that I saw listened to my concerns (no matter how off the wall) and answered all of my questions,” Kristina shares.

When Kristina’s labor stopped progressing and it became necessary to perform a C-section, the team at MedStar Georgetown made sure the couple felt calm and confident with the plan.

Baby Jack arrived on November 24, 2018, weighing 9 pounds, 6 oz. His delivery was just the beginning of a lasting relationship with MedStar Health.

“My husband and I liked the Ob/Gyn team so much that we knew immediately that we would use Georgetown Pediatrics for Jack,” Kristina says. “We now use MedStar Georgetown for all of our doctors because of the treatment and care we received from their Ob/Gyn team.”
